2025 was an interesting year for me, as my career took an unexpected turn, which led to Group receiving less attention than I would have liked to give it. Yet I have great plans for it still and I'd like to lift the veil on all the ideas that have been keeping me up at night.
You have used the Group module before and have preferably written some code for it. Yet anyone with a little knowledge of Drupal or an active interest in advanced access layers is invited to join as I will be pitching some really cool stuff.
I've been working on the Group module for well over a decade. It's grown to be the go-to solution for community sites built using Drupal and has inspired some new core APIs such as VariationCache and Access Policy API.
Yet, I am not done. My hunger has not been sated, my thirst is left unquenched (buy me a beer, see if it helps?). There is a lot more I want to do with the software, but the more experienced I get, the more valuable my time becomes and the less I can free up for my pet project. (If I had the chance, I would work on Group 24/7, it would be amazing and create world peace.)
Either way, that does not mean I don't still lie awake at night thinking of all the cool stuff I want to develop. Some of these things are still very much in the ideas phase, but others are already in varying degrees of being finished and even ready to release as part of version 4 (not yet released at the time of writing).
Come join me and listen to all the absolutely marvelous things we could have some day! Who knows, you might get so excited you want to make some of these ideas happen sooner :o
If you are a project/distribution/recipe/profile/... maintainer using Group and require or offer certain functionality that Group does not offer yet, you may find that there are plans to incorporate it into the main module. If at the end of the talk you feel like your amazing idea has not been mentioned, you can make your case and we can talk about that too. I'm sure we can find an elevator somewhere to pitch the idea in.
The main goal is to have fun while learning new things and see all the funky stuff you can do with Drupal and Group, though.
