We need to talk about AI. Not how you use it in your projects, but how it affects us an open source community, how we can continue to collaboratively work on code and contribute to the Drupal project together, and what the hidden costs for others are.
Prerequisite
No technical requirements.
Outline
An overview over
- What is described as AI?
- The uneven effects on people, climate, environment and power?
- What are effects on global markets?
- A scientific case study of AI in health care: structural bias, and choices about individuals
- Whose work is appropriated? What are the working conditions of outsourced workers who train AI models?
- A deeper look into review processes and AI generated content or code, both in science and in software development
- How does it affect the open source communities in general, and the Drupal community specifically?
- How do we continue to work and contribute together?
Note for the organizers: This is an updated version of the keynote at DrupalCamp Ruhr 2025 but with more focus on effects on Drupal and other open source communities. https://ifrik.gitlab.io/we-need-to-talk-about-ai/
Learning Objectives
- A broader understanding of effects that the use of AI can have, so that participants can continue the discussion in general and in specific projects.
- A discussion about how to continue working and contributing together, how to support a healthy community.
