Drupal migrations can be scary, unknown processes. Content is often messy and full of edge cases. What often starts out as simple can quickly grow out of control, with seemingly endless frustrations along the way.

With some groundwork, constraints, and clear expectations, things become a lot easier.

This session will give you some practical advice to planning and execute your content migration into Drupal.

Prerequisite

This talk is aimed at those involved with switching to Drupal from another platform, where there is existing content to be brought over.

For agency owners, project managers and developers. Familiarity with basic Drupal sitebuilding concepts (content types, taxonomy, media etc) is assumed, but no development experience is necessary.

Outline

Analysing your content. What is structured, what is fluid? How do you know what you are dealing with before you plan a migration? How do you know what you've got once it's in Drupal.

An high level overview of how Drupal's automated migration works. When to use it, when not to, and what alternatives there are. Can you migrate one page at a time? How might AI help?

When should you automate and when not? A migration will often get you 80% of the way there - what does that look like in practice? How do you deal with the other 20% without getting bogged down.

What expectations should clients have? How does a content freeze work in practice?

Tips for migrating "rich" content like HTML and media.
